About
Art and Art History were my favourite subjects at school. However, following school, I did not pick up a paintbrush again until I was about to retire. I bought the book “ Dog Days” by David Hockney, which contains the delightful paintings of his pet Daschunds. I thought maybe I could paint our “Jackie Russell” in a similar way. So I did … in acrylics. I then joined a local art group and later Tiverton Art Society.
I love painting. I really do it for myself with the hope of improvement. I mainly paint family and friends, places that mean something to me, and sometimes a record of an event. I enjoy visiting art galleries and art exhibitions, and have particularly enjoyed seeing paintings by “The Greats” during my lifetime. After lockdown, I went to an exhibition entitled “Art is the Antidote”, and that message appeals to me!
I don’t have any commercial aspirations, but I do have a desire to encourage others to take up painting. A group of friends of mine all said they “couldn’t draw” and were “hopeless at art at school”. I introduced them to Lino Printing, and they were amazed and thrilled with what they were able to create. Currently, I organise Artists’ Workshops for TAS, and it gives me enormous satisfaction to see members delighted by their achievements. Through art, I have connected with other like-minded people and have made good friends. I encourage anyone to have a go and join our society.
